This American Kestrel is the second in my current series of Nocturnes. This series was started, and continues, as a quiet rebellion against the noise and overwhelm of modern life. I felt a need to create a tranquil and timeless environment for my birds and a serene space for me to inhabit as I created them. And, most importantly, it is my hope that this deep feeling of peace and respite travels with this fellow as he finds his home.

Goshawk Portrait

In every bird I portray I research hundreds of images to find out what sets the birds apart, how best to portray the essence of his character and show him (or her) off to their very best. It will come as no surprise that the magnetic glare of the Goshawks eye was the starting point of this portrait, it’s a startling and very beautiful contrast the monochrome plumage of the bird. This fellow absolutely means business!

Saker Falcon Portrait

In this portrait I tried to convey the majesty of this stunning bird, the second largest falcon in the world and a powerful hunter. His broad chest and wide wings speak of speed and strength and I wanted to contrast that with a softer look in his eyes, a quiet moment of contemplation … before he gets to all the killing!

Peregrine Falcon Portrait

This small series of Raptor portraits was supposed to be a way for me to explore birds I was less familiar with, but it wasn’t long until my beloved Peregrine Falcon insisted on joining the gang. I think this must be the bird I’ve portrayed the most over my time as an artist and I still find new ways of looking at them. They are so beautiful, powerful and endlessly fascinating, I will never tire of having these fellows on my easel.
