Lakeshore at Dusk

In my painting ‘Lakeshore at Dusk’ I have tried to capture that magical moment at dusk when the birdsong has faded to silence and the night creatures have yet to stir, that fleeting feeling of being cradled between two worlds. The lakeshore seemed to me to be the perfect place to enjoy this moment of quiet enchantment, with shades of green glimmering across the glassy surface of the water as the Mallard makes his way home to roost.

Harlequin Duck

Although I was initially dubious about painting a Harlequin Duck (who would ever believe such a fantastical looking fellow was real!!!) I constantly came up with them in every single search for ‘most beautiful Ducks in the world’. And who am I to argue? These guys are absolutely stunning and a tiny bit strange looking, in short they are absolutely perfect.

Common Eider

I simply had to add my all time favourite duck, the beautiful Eider Drake, to my series of mini duck portraits. These fellows are so close to my heart and one of the very few ducks I get to see regularly in the wild, battling the cold North Sea and biting winds of the Northumberland coast. I love the contrast of the beautiful soft colours and feathers of this bird with their incredible toughness. They are so strange looking too, which only makes me love them all the more.

Mandarin Duck

The duck that started it all! This entire miniature duck portrait series came about because I was absolutely desperate to paint this beauty, his amazing feathers and sweet little face were irresistible to my artists eye. I was so happy with how he turned out, especially on the round panel, I decided to make a whole series of these fancy feathered gents.

Hooded Merganser

And of course no series of weird and very wonderful ducks would be complete without the spectacularly Hooded Merganser. These cutie pies are fast becoming one of my favourite ducks to paint, they are so expressive, full of character and let’s not forget that fabulous feathered hairdo!

American Kestrel II

Of course I couldn’t resist making a friend for my first American Kestrel! And this time I simply had to portray him in a pose that really showed off his beautifully patterned chest feathers, they were perfect to work on in white charcoals.

Yellow-crowned Night Heron

This is the first time I’ve worked on a Yellow-crowned night heron and it won’t be the last I’m certain, his looks are a perfect blend of pretty cute fellow and murderous dinosaur (to say nothing of his little flippy hairdo) that really ticks all my bird artists boxes!

The next in this series just had to be this fellow, his fancy feathers, his shiny eyes and those ear tufts! As many times as I've portrayed these magnificent birds I just couldn’t resist the temptation to make him pocket sized.

Pollen I, 2025

An original painting of one of my precious Buff Tailed Bumblebees on thick cotton, hand-deckled paper. The paper has been aged with a watercolour glaze and then the bumblebee worked on with graphite, watercolour, gouache and I've created the raised pollen dusting with gesso and 24kt gold Leaf.

This little bee painting will be carefully wrapped in glassine paper and acid free tissue then lovingly sealed with a wax bee stamp and a hand embellished thank you note.
