I always have a soft spot for the more mischievous birds and there are very few birds that can out mischief a Magpie! This fellow was so much fun to work on, I tried to express a confidence and fierce intelligence in the tilt of his head and discovering the shimmering colours in his ‘black’ feathers was such a joy.

Eurasian Blackbird

This fellow is also known as the ‘Common Blackbird’ here in the UK but I felt a bit mean putting that as the poor fellows title so ‘Eurasian Blackbird’ it is. Much more cosmopolitan and fancy, just how he likes it! These birds are brilliant characters in the garden, quite fearless and not adverse to giving the careless gardener a beak full of sass whenever they stray to close to their patch.

Bohemian Waxwing

An original oil painting of one of our most treasured winter visitors, the Bohemian Waxwing. With his blushing cheeks and sealing wax red tips on their wings, these rotund beauties are a real joy to spot as they flock to our shores in their thousands. ⁣

Starling

When I was working on this guy I really tried to capture something of their ‘always on the lookout for mischief’ character in his pose, getting lots of inspiration from the band of feathered hooligans that regularly invade my garden looking for trouble and sunflower seeds. These fellows are another of our resident garden troublemakers, but an absolute joy to paint with his beautiful star markings and iridescent feathers.

Barn Owl

An original charcoal drawing of a Barn Owl. Although I’ve portrayed Barn Owls many times, perhaps more than any other owl, this is the first time I’ve rendered one in charcoal and it was a joy to bring her soft beauty to life in such delicate medium.

Hooded Merganser

Late last year I decided to dive into the world of ducks, a bird family fowly neglected by me (Thats the last duck pun, I promise!) and wanted to start off my journey with a fellow with the best hair in the biz, the Hooded Merganser. I’ve painted him on a beautiful cradled birch circular panel as this fellow has such a serene air about him, in my mind this painting feels like looking through a porthole observing nature at peace. ⁣

Little Owl

The very littlest Little Owl I’ve ever portrayed. ⁣This diminutive diurnal is the first my series of The Owls of the World in Miniature. Once I realised there are well over 200 owls in the world I knew I’d better get a move on if I wanted to portray as many as possible! The only way I could possibly do this was to make them in small sketch form, so here we are.

The next in this series just had to be this fellow, his fancy feathers, his shiny eyes and those ear tufts! As many times as I've portrayed these magnificent birds I just couldn’t resist the temptation to make him pocket sized.

This little Saw Whet Owl is the latest addition to my series of The Owls of the World in Miniature. I didn’t really have to shrink this owl down too much, those little fellows are as dinky as they are adorable! ⁣

Original Art Giveaway!

As a way to say ‘thank you’ for being in my Early Bird Gang (i.e. for putting up with my many badly written emails and endless bird yapping) I’m going to be hosting a series of giveaways this coming year. Most of them will be mailing list only but I will occasionally include my friends on instagram and you guys will automatically be included in these too.

You don’t have to do anything at all to enter, just be your very lovely selves and I’ll pick a name at random from my mailing list as the winner.

The first of these giveaways will be the above female Belted Kingfisher, delicately painted in glazes of watercolour on 100% cotton paper.
